To those who knew him, Frank Phillips legendary charm transcended
the great petroleum products that bear his famous name. Born in
a Nebraska log cabin in 1873, Frank, and his brother, L.E. Phillips,
went to Bartelsville, Oklahoma in 1905 to seek their fortune in
oil. After drilling 3 holes with no success, their fourth,
and final effort, struck oil. Amazingly, so did the next 80 consecutive
wells! Phillips 66 was founded in 1917, and became well-known
for developing popular new lubricants and other petroleum products.
The company now holds over 15,000 patents. In 2002, Phillips 66
merged with Conoco, becoming ConocoPhillips, an international
energy company, headquartered in Houston, Texas.
